Kindergarten is a year of tremendous growth. Children are becoming more independent, developing new academic skills, forming deeper friendships, and beginning to see themselves as capable learners.
Kindergarten at The Acorn combines strong academic foundations with the hands-on, joyful approach that defines our school. Children build skills in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies while continuing to learn through projects, discussion, movement, outdoor experiences, creativity, and purposeful play. Children are encouraged to wonder, investigate, create, question, solve problems, and think deeply while developing the skills they need for continued success in school and beyond.
Learning With Purpose
Our kindergarten curriculum is thoughtfully designed to meet children where they are while helping them take their next steps as learners.
Academic skills are taught through a combination of direct instruction, hands-on experiences, exploration, discussion, literature, projects, and meaningful practice.
Children are given opportunities to apply what they learn rather than simply memorize information.
Growing Independence
Kindergarten is also about becoming increasingly independent.
Children learn to manage their belongings, make choices, follow routines, work through challenges, care for their classroom, and take greater responsibility for their learning.
Teachers provide structure and support while gradually giving children more opportunities to take ownership of their work.
We want students to develop the confidence to say:
“I can try.”
“I can figure it out.”
“I can ask for help.”
“I can try again.”
Building Character & Community
Academic growth is only part of the kindergarten experience.
Children are learning how to be members of a community. They practice listening, cooperating, resolving conflicts, showing empathy, expressing their feelings, and considering the perspectives of others.
We intentionally create opportunities for children to experience the responsibility and joy that come from being part of something bigger than themselves.
Making Memories Beyond the Classroom
Some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. These opportunities to explore new places, try new things, and experience the joy of doing something together as a community. Our traditions become part of what makes kindergarten at The Acorn so special—and memories that children and families carry with them long after they leave our campus.
Lost Maples Camping Trip
One of our most anticipated kindergarten traditions is our annual camping trip to Lost Maples State Natural Area.
Families have the opportunity to experience the outdoors together, explore the natural environment, spend time with their classmates and teachers, and discover the joys—and occasional challenges—of being away from home.
Amtrak Trip to San Marcos

Another beloved tradition is our annual Amtrak train trip to San Marcos.
For many children, riding a train is an entirely new experience. The journey itself becomes part of the adventure as students travel together, observe the world outside their windows, and experience what it means to navigate a new environment as a group.
More Than a Field Trip
A field trip can be more than a day away from school. Our kindergarten traditions extend beyond these signature trips. Throughout the year, children participate in experiences that give them opportunities to celebrate their classroom community, explore the outdoors, share their creativity, and mark important milestones in their kindergarten journey.
Preparing Children for What Comes Next
Our Kindergarten is a place where children can be both learners and children.
There is time to read and time to run.
Time to solve problems and time to imagine.
Time to work independently and time to build friendships.
Time to master new skills and time to simply wonder.
Because childhood doesn't need to be rushed in order for children to succeed. When children are given the opportunity to wonder, explore, and discover, they develop the confidence to become lifelong learners.
