We embrace that range. Our primary goal is for every child to love reading and feel confident as a reader, regardless of the pace at which reading develops.

Our literacy program incorporates the Language Experience Approach, creating a print-rich environment where children encounter reading and writing as meaningful parts of their everyday classroom experience.

From the first day of school, a daily message provides a natural context for children to explore written language. Over time, they become familiar with concepts such as capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, and spelling through repeated, meaningful use rather than memorization of isolated rules.

Children keep journals, create class books, contribute to a growing word wall, and write about their own ideas and experiences.

Brave spelling is welcomed as children begin putting their thoughts into writing. As their understanding of sounds and phonics develops, their spelling and writing naturally become increasingly sophisticated.

At The Acorn, geography begins with curiosity.

As the class follows the adventures of The Tortoise and The Hare, children discover the world beyond their own classroom. After reading The Race, families are invited to ask friends and relatives who live or travel in other places to send postcards to the class.

Those postcards become invitations to explore.

Children locate cities, states, and countries on a globe while examining photographs of geographical features, landmarks, communities, and cultural traditions.

Geography becomes more than a collection of names and places.

Creativity is an essential part of the kindergarten experience.

Children have daily opportunities for artistic expression as part of the classroom curriculum. In addition, students are introduced to Master Artists and Fine Art each week.

Children learn about individual artists, their techniques, materials, perspectives, and creative processes. They then have opportunities to experiment with similar media and techniques while developing their own ideas and artistic voices.

It is to discover how an artist sees—and then discover how you see.
