Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

WATER DAY – We read Mud Puddle by Robert Munch and then we had so much fun getting wet, dirty, and soapy on Tuesday! We squirted water onto targets on the chalkboard with water blasters. There was a car wash, shaving cream table, kiddie pools with water toys, bubble station, water pump, water slide (which we then dug a river for the water in the sand), and an overhanging sprinkler.

BOOKS - We read some Little Owl teacher favorites for the last week of school including A Tale of Two Beasts by Fiona Robertson and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault.

ART – We painted with spaghetti noodles colored with watercolor paint and played with playdough and textured rollers.

MUSIC – We danced to “The Pirate Song” by Tom Hunter.

SCIENCE –We set off fireworks inside to celebrate the last week of school! We made fireworks in a glass by mixing a few tablespoons of vegetable oil with a few drops of different colors of food coloring.  Then we added it to a tall glass of warm water.  The food coloring slowly sank through the top layer of oil and when it reached the water the color quickly diffused and looked similar to an exploding firework.  We talked about the differing densities of water, oil, and food coloring while we waited for the anticipated color explosions.

Thank you everyone for all the love and support you have given us throughout this year. We have truly loved being a part of your children’s lives and have enjoyed watching them grow and learn each day at school.

We hope you have a fantastic and safe summer!

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 AM TWT – Hummingbirds

Recent News:

· BOOKS - We read Mr. Seahorse by Eric Carle as we practiced our observation skills in finding the hidden fish and learned how different daddy fish take care of their eggs. In Swimmy by Leo Lionni we discussed how some types fish swim together in “schools.” We also read No Ordinary Fish by Anne Lawrence to hear some fascinating facts about sharks.

· ART – We painted on easels, used garlic presses and scissors with playdough, and made watercolor paintings with eye droppers.

· MUSIC – We danced to “The Pirate Song” by Tom Hunter.

· SCIENCE – We learned how sharks and fish are buoyant and why they do not just stay on the bottom of the ocean. Fish have swim bladders that have gas inside and sharks have very oily livers to help them float. We tested this by putting a water bottle with no air bubbles in a tub of water, and it sank. Then we put a bottle of water with an air bubble in it and a bottle filled with vegetable oil and no air bubble and saw how they floated in the tub.

· ACTIVITIES – We fished for magnetic sea creatures and identified the letters written on each sea creature we caught.

Week of 5/17-5/19

Theme: Sea Life

Dramatic Play: Ocean

Highlights:

· The Dramatic Play Room is still the ocean with a submarine, shark cage, boat, seashells to dig for in a sand table, oxygen tanks to wear on our backs, toy sea creatures to play with, etc.

· Tuesday (5/17) will be WATER DAY! Please send your child to school with a swimsuit on under their clothes, water shoes, and TWO towels. We are going to get thoroughly wet, muddy, and soapy on the playground as we splash into our last week of school.

· Wednesday (5/18) we will have a silly spaghetti day.

· Thursday (5/19) will be our last day of school.

We hope you have a fin-tastic weekend!

Recent News:

EID – Tuesday we celebrated Eid with Nadine and her mom, Qudsia. They came dressed in their traditional clothes and told us all about the foods, gifts, hugs, and other traditions they do on Eid. Everyone received an envelope with coins and a star necklace inside as their Eid gift. During play time the children added beads to their star necklaces and Qudsia did henna on all the children’s hands. The children and teachers were fascinated and very patient as their hands were painted and then dried. Thank you Qudsia for sharing your traditions, time, and talents with us!

BOOKS – We read What Ocean Creature Am I? by Nicholas Harris and Martin Camm to introduce some of the fascinating creatures that live in the ocean.

SCIENCE – We compared how different items floated in salt water compared to fresh water, discovered that the items floated better in salt water, and talked about how the ocean is salty and easier to float in than lake, or river water.

ART – We painted with bubble wrap and fish stamps and made bracelets with beads and pipe cleaners with our mommies.

MUSIC – We worked on our songs for Mom’s Day.

ACTIVITIES – We practiced our scissor skills by cutting along the lines of the “lollipop people” in order to give them paper legs to walk. The straighter lines did more normal walks while the zig-zag lines made for some very silly walks.

MOM’S DAY – Thank you so much to all the moms who helped make this day special for our Little Owls! The children had been really looking forward to singing, dancing, reading, and playing at school with their mommies.

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

BOOKS - We read Wooly Sheep and Hungry Goats, The Chicken or the Egg?, and Smart, Clean Pigs all by Allan Fowler as we learned about the animals and their products.

ART – We made symmetry art with yarn, did spin art in salad spinners, and painted with cut celery and bell peppers.

MUSIC – We worked on our songs for Mom’s Day.

SCIENCE – We learned how fabric and yarn can be dyed to make various colors using plants grown in the garden. We created and tested our own dye using red cabbage. We discovered that red cabbage makes a purple dye when it is boiled in water. However, if we changed the pH levels of the dye we created different colors. When we made the dye more acidic by adding lemon juice, we got pink dye. When we made the dye more basic by adding baking soda, we got blue dye. We were very surprised to see the colors change so drastically!

ACTIVITIES – We practiced our hand-eye coordination by completing sheep lacing cards with wool yarn.

CREATURES – We got to pet the chicks before they went back to the farm. It has been so much fun for everyone to watch the chicks grow! We also released our worms from the sensory table out into the garden on the playground.

Thank you to the Solis family for donating a small camping tent to the Acorn for the children to play in!
