Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

Ms. Carrie came upstairs to do a Fire Drill with us. We mentioned the importance of having a specific place to meet outside if there is a fire. What outdoor location do you meet at if there is a fire at your house?

BOOKS – This week we read No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons) by Jean E. Pendziwol to reinforce all the fire safety lessons we have learned in a really fun way. We also read Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney as we prepared for Dad’s Day.

SONGS - We danced around with bean bags to “The Beanie Bag Dance” by Greg and Steve.

ART – We worked on our Dad’s Day presents, painted with golf balls, and tore paper to make collages.

SCIENCE – We revisited our bread and germ experiment and saw the extreme difference washing our hands made. The bread we touched with dirty hands was covered all over in various colors of mold. The bread we touched with newly washed hands only had one spot of mold on it.

ACTIVITIES – We practiced our hand-eye coordination by lacing around firetruck lacing cards.

The firefighters came for a visit on Thursday. They talked to us about fire safety, told us the purposes of some of their equipment, and showed us how they put on their uniforms. The firetruck was a big hit!

Week of 10/19-10/21

The Dramatic Play Room will become the surface of the moon. We will have a giant rocket ship, jet packets, control center, rovers, and telescopes.

Wednesday (10/20) will be Dad’s Day at 2:30pm on the playground! Please remember all adults must wear masks.

Pajama Day will be on Thursday, October 28th. Please send your child to school wearing their pajamas on this day.

We hope you have a great weekend!

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

· BOOKS – This week we read Tinyville Town I’m a Firefighter by Brian Biggs, I Want to be a Firefighter by Daniel Liebman, and I’m Going to be a Firefighter by Edith Kunhardt as we learned about the different things that firefighters do when they are on duty.

· SONGS - We danced around with bean bags to “The Beanie Bag Dance” by Greg and Steve. We also sang and did the hand motions for the song “Stop, Drop, and Roll” to the tune of “Hot Cross Buns.”

· ART – We painted on easels with fire colors and we worked on some artwork and gifts for our dads. You will get to see what they are on Dad’s Day!

· SCIENCE – We lit a candle in a jar, placed a lid on top, and watched the fire slowly go out. We learned that fire needs oxygen to burn and if it does not have access to any oxygen, it will go out. We then practiced doing stop, drop, and roll to put out felt flames stuck to our clothes. We also learned how smoke rises by observing the smoke from a recently blown out candle float upwards. Then we practiced crawling under smoke by taking turns crawling under a black blanket slightly raised off of the floor.

· ACTIVITIES – We counted and measured with Unifix Cubes.

· Picture Day on Tuesday was very entertaining as our photographer was very silly and great at getting the children to laugh and smile.

Week of 10/12-10/14

Theme: Fire Safety

Dramatic Play: Fire Station

Highlights:

· The Dramatic Play Room will continue to be a fire station with fire trucks, a wooden climber covered in tissue paper fire, a dispatch center with keyboard and phone, a kitchen to cook meals between fires, short hoses, little fire extinguishers, fire helmets, etc.

· Tuesday (10/12) we will do a Fire Drill and then Music with Ms. Ruth.

· Wednesday (10/13) we will work on getting ready for Dad’s Day!

· Thursday (10/14) the Firefighters will come visit us with their firetruck if they are not called away to go fight a real fire. We will also have Spanish with Ms. Mary.

· Dad’s Day will be Wednesday, October 20th at 2:30pm!

We hope you have a fiery weekend!

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

BOOKS – This week we read I Can Move by Mandy Suhr and learned that the bones inside our bodies support us and help us move around. Dem Bones by Bob Barner told us how the bones are all connected.  We also read Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer to discuss how the dentist helps everyone keep their teeth healthy.

SONGS - We danced around the room to “Dry Bones (Dem Bones)” performed by The Sing-Along Kids.

ART – We painted with toothbrushes, made our own x-rays by tracing our hands on black paper, squeezing glue from mini glue bottles, and attaching Q-tips for bones, and bounced bingo daubers on paper.

SCIENCE – We did an experiment over the course of the week on tooth decay. We scrubbed toothpaste on one side of each hard-boiled egg. Then we placed them each in a different jar filled with a different liquid. We tried lemon juice, apple juice, vinegar, and water. The side of the egg that was scrubbed with toothpaste was less effected by the liquid than the side that was bare. The egg in the water hardly reacted at all. The eggshells represented the enamel on our teeth and showed us the importance of brushing our teeth to help protect them.

ACTIVITIES – We talked about proper teeth care and practiced brushing plaster teeth models to “Brush Your Teeth” by Raffi.

We learned about our five senses and which body parts help us experience them.

Wednesday (10/6) we will learn about and practice some fire safety.

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

BOOKS – We read I’m Getting a Check-Up by Marilyn Singer as we discussed the different medical instruments that a doctor uses during a regular checkup.

ART – We practiced unwrapping and applying band-aids onto a piece of paper to make a collage, played with play dough, and painted with water balloons filled with air.

SCIENCE – We started a science experiment to see what a difference hand washing really makes. We have quite a few slices of bread sealed in Ziploc bags taped to the wall of the classroom right now. We have our “Control Bread” which was transferred to the baggie with gloved hands, so it is as close to untouched as possible. We also have bread in different baggies that have been touched by dirty hands, hands that have been cleaned with just hand sanitizer, and hands that have been washed with water and soap. We will wait and see what happens to these slices of bread over the next couple of weeks.

ACTIVITIES – We played Simon Says to identify different body parts and worked on assembling puzzles together.

HEALTH - We met Mr. Sneeze and his family of balloons. Whenever Mr. Sneeze sneezed, he sprayed confetti everywhere just like we spray germs everywhere when we sneeze. This helped us see why it is so important to cover our mouths with our elbow (a.k.a. “sneeze pocket”) if we need to sneeze.

Week of 9/28-9/30

Theme: Our Amazing Bodies

Dramatic Play: Doctor’s Office

Highlights:

The Dramatic Play Room will continue to be a Doctor’s Office with an examination table, baby dolls, various medical instruments, sink, and a check-in table with a keyboard and phone for scheduling appointments.

Tuesday (9/28) we will learn about the dentist and the importance of brushing our teeth. We will also have Music with Ms. Ruth.

Wednesday (9/29) we will learn about the bones in our bodies.

Thursday (9/30) We will have Spanish with Ms. Mary.

Dad’s Day will be Wednesday, October 20th at 2:30pm!

We hope you have a great weekend!
