Three Day PM Class News 1/21/22

January 19, 2022
By The Owl Team

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

BOOKS - We read A World of Tools by Barbara Adams to introduce the different kinds of tools used on a construction site and at home, Building a Home by JoAnn Early Macken as we learned the different tasks involved in building a house, and Road Builders by B.G. Hennessy to learn how they make the roads we drive on and the different vehicles that are involved in that process.

ART – We made our own structures and rolled out our own roads with playdough, made symmetrical paintings with strings and folded paper, and painted on easels with paintbrushes that were taped to the front of construction helmets, so our designs were made by the movements of our heads.

SCIENCE – We built three different types of towers out of blocks and discovered that the wider the base is, the higher we can build before it falls over.

ACTIVITES – We measured different objects by seeing how many Unifix Cubes long the items were. There was a lot of counting and comparison involved in this project as well as teamwork when measuring larger things such as tables. We also learned how to properly build with Lincoln Logs.

TAPE TOWN – We now have a growing town made of colored masking tape on the floor of our Motor Room. We add a little bit to it every day. Right now we have a large road going all around the room to drive large wooden cars, an airport, lake, hospital, HEB, mechanic garage, and a gas station.

Week of 1/25-1/27

Theme: Construction

Dramatic Play: Construction Site

Highlights:

In Dramatic Play we will have a construction site with a climber that will act as our building, a drafting table to draw blueprints, and lots of blocks and tools to build our own architectural designs.

Tuesday (1/25) we will begin our own constructions in art using wood glue and wood scraps. Then we will have Music with Ms. Ruth.

Wednesday (1/26) we will add color to our wood scrap structures.

Thursday (1/27) we will get to learn about demolition and how the professionals do it safely. This will then be applied in our own block building demolitions. Then we will have Spanish with Ms. Mary.

We hope you have a constructive weekend!

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

BOOKS – We read How Are You Feelin’ Juan Pablo Chameleon by Dan St. Romain to discuss different types of feelings and some good ways we can deal with them as well as the fact that animals have feelings too, and we need to treat them nicely. We read Sorry (Really Sorry) by Joanna Cotler as we found that it hurts others when we use mean words and actions, so it is very important to use kind words and actions with our friends and family. Pet Show! by Ezra Jack Keats helped us mentally prepare for our pet show the following day.

MUSIC – We danced and froze to “Animal Freeze Dance” by The Kiboomers. Then we all took turns playing the Kalimba (Thumb Harp) and learned that most animals do not have opposable thumbs like people do.

ART – We made beds for our pet rocks, painted with animals stamps, and made collars for our toy animals out of pipe cleaners and beads.

ACTIVITY – We learned two different ways to play dominoes (ours had animals on them). One was to set them up close to each other in a row and then knock them down causing a chain effect. The other way was to play the domino game and place the matching pictures next to each other to create a winding path.

SHOW & TELL – All of the children loved showing their pets to their friends as well as seeing what kinds of animals (or minerals in the case of pet rocks) their friends and teachers have at home. It was a fun opportunity to practice public speaking as well as to learn more about each other’s lives outside of school.

Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 PM TWT – Little Owls

Recent News:

We are so happy to have everyone back from Christmas Break! We missed all of our Little Owls and are ready for more learning adventures together.

BOOKS – We read Paula the Vet by Julia Donaldson, Tinyville Town: I’m a Veterinarian by Brian Biggs, Elmer’s Special Day by David McKee, and Llama Llama Home with Mama by Anna Dewdney.

Since we have been talking about pets, the children were introduced to a silly kind of pet.  They met Rocko the Pet Rock and got to see him perform some tricks such as stay, sit, down, heel, and roll over.  They thought it was humorous and loved using their imaginations. They were particularly excited when they found out that they would each get their own pet rock.  We discussed how you have to be very gentle with a pet rock because if you are not careful you could hurt someone, break something, or even damage your special rock.  We hope they take very good care of their new pet rocks at home.

MUSIC – We turned on our imaginations and pretended to be lots of different animals to “Can You Leap Like a Frog” by Greg & Steve.

ART – We painted with watercolors, played with shaving cream, and decorated our own pet rocks.

SCIENCE – We tested all of our rocks to see what “tricks” they could do and discovered that the different shapes allowed them to do different things such as sliding vs. rolling down ramps. We also discussed different things we can do to help keep each other healthy (i.e. washing hands, keeping fingers out of the nose and mouth, coving mouth with elbow when sneezing/coughing, staying home when sick, eating heathy foods, getting plenty of sleep, etc.)

ACTIVITY – We sorted lots of different animals by where they live (land, water, air) and talked about amphibians.

Week of 1/11-1/13

Theme: Pets

Dramatic Play: Veterinarian Clinic

Highlights:

In the Dramatic Play Room we will continue to have a vet clinic where the children can schedule vet appointments at a reception desk, give toy animals medical checkups, and groom their furry friends.

Tuesday (1/11) we will discuss how to properly take care of pets and have Music with Ms. Ruth.

Wednesday (1/12) we will have our own pet show for Show and Tell. Please text, or email Miss Lily a picture of any pets you may have at home by Tuesday (1/11). She will print them out and on Thursday (1/13) the children will get to tell everyone about the pet(s) they have at home. If you do not have any pets at home, please let us know. We will take a picture of your child’s pet rock they made this week, so they will still get to participate.

Thursday (1/13) we will read and talk about what to do with all our different feelings and have Spanish with Ms. Mary.

We hope you have a great weekend!
