Weekly News: Recap and Preview

Class: 3 AM TWT – Hummingbirds

Recent News:

The Hummingbirds’ first week at school flew by so fast.  We had such a wonderful time getting to know your children and introducing them to this fantastic class of Hummingbirds.

On the first day, to help ease the transition of coming to school, we read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.  In this story Chester Raccoon does not want to go to school because he wants to stay at home with Mama Raccoon.  However, when Mama teaches him the secret of the Kissing Hand he is ready to go meet new friends and try new things.

On Wednesday, Ms. Lily demonstrated the importance of rubbing the soap all over our hands when we wash them by smearing paint all over her hands, so we could really see when they were clean.  We wash our hands to the following song a lot:

To the tune of “Frere Jacques

Tops and bottoms, tops and bottoms

In between, in between

Rubbing all the germs off, rubbing all the germs off

To make our hands clean, to make our hands clean

On Thursday, when we read Please, Mr. Panda by Steve Antony, we learned about the importance of saying please and thank you.

In art this week we drew with tempera paint sticks and bingo daubers.

We also had fun playing a ball rolling game to help us get to know each other better.

The Assistant Teachers!

I would like to introduce your child’s assistant teachers, Janet Fenton and Adriana Mora-Pena.

This is Janet’s first year at The Acorn. She has diligently spent her summer helping us get ready to welcome students back this summer.  Prior to her time at The Acorn, she has served as part of the nursery staff at her church as well as a volunteer in her church Music Ministry Program. She has a long standing history as the home school teacher of our own Miss Lily Fenton, Miss Janet’s daughter.  She is also assisting with our Caterpillar class. Her enthusiasm and warmth towards children will be a wonderful addition to our Acorn team.

This is Adriana’s first year at the Acorn. She started her time with us as a teacher in our summer camp.  She previously worked as a teacher in the Mexican American Unity Council’s after school program and an ESL teacher.  She also has worked as a sales associate and greeter and her warm, sensitive nature draw children to her. She is fluent in Spanish and plays violin and is also helping with our Caterpillar and Little Lamb Classes, as well as providing rotational assistance to our Red Apples and Blue Bears. We are very lucky to have them as a wonderful addition to our Acorn!

Week of 8/25-8/27

Theme: Friends

Dramatic Play: Housekeeping

Highlights

In Dramatic Play we will continue to have a kitchen for the children to prepare meals for each other, wash dishes, etc.

We will set up our own hummingbird feeder in our garden on the playground!

Reminder: Please wait until you are at the front of the car line to unload your child, unless told otherwise. There is only one teacher checking temperatures at a time, so waiting will actually help to keep the car line moving due to the fact that the teacher will not have to do as much walking up and down the driveway.  It will also keep your child cooling in the car longer to help prevent a false fever reading on the thermometer. Thank you for your patience as we work this new system together!

Please remember to send a water bottle with your child’s name on it every day. The children have enjoyed taking very good care of their water bottles at school.

We’re having a great time and are looking forward to a super year together!

Lily, Janet, and Adriana
